04/04/2022 - Cardiff & East Leake

There’s an incredible atmosphere in camp Ivanhoe right now, with the spring race season well underway. There’s tons to bring you from the goings on lately, so let’s start with catching you up on last Sunday’s antics.

Crossing the border into Wales, Paul Averillo took part in the Cardiff half marathon once more, one of his favourite events, having missed it for the last couple of years for reasons we’re all well aware of.

The day was particularly warm and sunny for the runners, even as they stood on the start line at 10am, quite a surprise for an event in March. The route takes runners past the capital’s most iconic landmarks with beautiful scenery and historic buildings, and is mostly flat and fast. It starts outside Cardiff Castle, heading down past the Principality and Cardiff City Stadiums on the way to Penarth. The glorious Penarth Marina comes into view before crossing the barrage and heading to Cardiff Bay. Norwegian Church and Wales Millennium Centre are next up, before venturing north, completing a loop of the beautiful Roath Park Lake before the grandstand finish in the heart of the city at the Civic Centre.

Having had company from a friend for the majority of the 13.1 miles, Paul completed the final stage solo after a consistent and strong effort, rewarding him with an absolutely fantastic 1 minute and 24 second personal best, and a finish time of 1:56:20.

Whilst we are a running club (clue’s in the name) we have lots of talented athletes in our ranks that also participate in multi-sport events. Last Sunday saw the staging of various disciplines at East Leake. Andrea Trickett and Fiona Betts were in action; Andrea completing the sprint distance triathlon (400m swim, 22km bike and 5km run) in a total time of 1:25:47 and Fiona completing the Aquathlon (400m swim and 5km run) in a total time of 31:41.
