18/03/2018 - 2018 Aldi Ashby20, Cancelled

Aldi Ashby 20, March 2018 – Victim of the Elements

In its 30 year history the only time, prior to last weekend, that the Ashby 20 had been cancelled was in 2001 due to the Foot and Mouth outbreak. Throughout the week organisers of the event were anxiously monitoring the weather forecast, hoping that the weekend forecast would change at some point. On Friday morning it did change - it got worse, with the Met Office issuing an Amber warning due to high winds, snow, ice and “feels like” temperatures of -10. Armed with this evidence, and knowing that 1,500 runners would be travelling from all corners of Britain, the organisers, Ivanhoe Runners had no alternative but to cancel the race.

Richard Bebbington, the Race Director, said, “The decision wasn’t taken lightly. We have to consider the health and safety of our competitors, over 250 volunteers, and many spectators. The decision did get a mixed reaction, however the majority appreciated the early cancellation as this allowed them to make alternative plans”.

With the message being quickly shared via social media messages of support came flowing in, such as:

“Well done to Ashby 20 Race Committee for prompt decision and good comms. Thank you for doing your best”

“Absolutely spot on decision making, must have been a nightmare for you as race organisers but you have dealt with this perfectly. The early communication was excellent, as has been the follow up communication”.

“Agree with everyone the communication over this has been outstanding. But then again I’d expect nothing else form this event”.

24 hours after cancelling the event, United Kingdom Athletics (UKA) sent out their own warning to all endurance events throughout the UK affected by the weather warning, stating that “for events affected by these weather warnings we strongly suggest cancellation or postponement of your event for the benefit of everyone involved”.

The 2018 Aldi Ashby 20, the race that never happened, is dedicated to Ivanhoe Runner Brian Gough who sadly lost his battle with Leukaemia last year. Brian was a founder member of the club and was a former Race Director of the event. He was an inspiration to so many at Ivanhoe Runners and the wider running community. Despite the weather stopping the race it was a fitting tribute to Brian knowing that each registered runner will get their famous hoodies, which this year incorporates the letters ‘BG’ in memory of Brian.

The Team at Ashby 20 are currently working on refund options and distribution of hoodies.
