July saw the hottest day of the year with temperatures soaring into the 30s, yet this didn’t stop an incredible performance from Julian Rawlings who took part in the Outlaw Ironman Triathlon at Holme Pierrepoint in Nottingham. Completing his first ironman event - a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile cycle and full 26.2 mile marathon run – Julian finished in a superb 15 hours 15 minutes, demonstrating perfect pacing to cope very well with the heat which took its toll on a number of athletes who struggled to finish. Well done Ironman Julian!

Elsewhere it was a double Ivanhoe prize winning performance at the Chesterfield Spire 10 mile race where hot conditions again made for a tough race with an uphill climb for 4.5 miles followed by a steep descent, a brief flat section and a further uphill climb to the finish. Alistair Chambers had a great run to win the Vet 50 men’s prize, finishing a superb 13th overall in 1:08:04 ahead of Andrew Jeyes who also had an excellent run winning the 1st vet 65 prize and finishing 36th overall in 1:15:51.

Shirley Marlow and Karen Marfleet had a busy weekend, running the Colin Potter 10k in Derby on Friday 5th July. Shirley finished in 370th place in 1:05:48 followed by Karen, 385th in 1:08:42. On Sunday both ran the Desford 7 mile event along with and Katie Cotton and Sarah Taylor who both had a great run finishing together in 1:00:27 (37th and 38th places) ahead of Karen and Shirley (1:24:00, 76th and 77th). Finally Carol Hall took part in the Wyre Forest Trail Half Marathon finding the conditions tough in the heat to finish in 2 hours 25 minutes, rounding off another busy weekend of running for the club.
