11/09/2022 - From Newcaste to S.Shields

Race results

A nostalgic trip to the North West occupied the 2nd Sunday of September. The Great North Run was back in its full glory, taking runners from Newcastle to South Shields.

With the passing of our Queen Elizabeth II only a few days prior to consider, organisers had confirmed to still hold the event, despite postponing the Friday and Saturday events. The morning started with a minute’s silence, those watching the coverage at home treated to the top of our very own Paul Averillo’s head as he paid his respects. Rest in peace Your Majesty.

First back for the club, improving on his previous club record was Mark Parker, and scored a 25 second PB in a time of 1:16:31. Alistair Chambers was next, breaking the sub 7 min/mile barrier for a superb time of 1:31:59 and 11th in his age category!

Emily Partridge was Ivanhoe’s first lady home in 1:41:14, her final hard race effort before Chicago marathon. Only few seconds in it to our next runner, Ian Kirk, opting for half the distance of his normal feats following his epic achievement at Comrades, ran the course in 1:41:22.

A huge PB came storming home next, in the shape of Paul who’s been grafting hard on his road to London. 1:49:52 was over 6 minutes quicker than he ran at Cardiff in March.

Being supported by her husband and mum, who had cheers for all those in blue they spotted, was Georgie Smith running 1:52:08, followed by Rich Hope, no stranger to the biggest half marathon in the world, who ran 1:56:24.

Judy Mouncer also had family giving her never ending encouragement, thanks to Peter and Robin, finishing in 2:00:52 and described the event as a fabulous experience. Lisa Hall was our next superstar to finish, running 2:08:06 and ran for the Wishes for Kids charity.

The phenomenon that is Matt Humphreys triumphed the 13.1 miles next for the club, completing the distance in 2:13:22. Simon Hall, winner of the Most Improved award for 2021 added another half marathon run to his belt, running 2:23:46.

The wonderful Hoult’s completed our set of the blue team, Mark and Sonia running 2:27:56 and 2:28:24 respectively. Sonia’s training was a success but she did confess to having moments where she struggled, but we’re mega proud of you Son!
